How to Make Bò Lúc Lắc Recipe (Vietnamese Shaking Beef)

Today we are making one of my favorite weeknight dinner meals Bò Lúc Lắc Recipe (Vietnamese Shaking Beef)! If you don’t know Bò means beef and Lúc Lắc means to shake or shaking. The beef itself is not shaking but it just refers to the method on how you cook the beef in the pan.

If you’re in a hurry, you can mix everything up and let it marinate for 30 minutes to an hour, but I recommend letting it marinate 2-4 hrs for the full flavor effect. This recipe is super easy and most of the ingredients you’ll have at home besides the bell peppers but it’s pretty easy to find.

For garnishes, I like some fresh lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes, because they just complement the marinated beef so well. And of course, a side of steamed rice to go along with it! Let me know how it goes and what other recipes you guys want!

Ingredients

  • For the Beef:
1 lb beef (sirloin or tenderloin, cut into 1-inch cubes)

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp fish sauce

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tbsp chicken bouillon

  • 1 tbsp minced garlic

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)

  • For the Salad:
  • 1/2 red onion (thinly sliced)

  • 1 cucumber (sliced)
    2 tomatoes (cut into wedges)

  • Lettuce

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp sugar

  • Dipping sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1 lime (juiced)

Directions

  • Marinate the Beef:
In a large bowl, combine oyster sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, chicken bouillon, sugar, garlic, black pepper, and sesame oil. Add the beef cubes and toss to coat evenly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours in the fridge for extra flavor).
  • Prepare the Salad:
While the beef is marinating, prepare the simple salad. Mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until the sugar dissolves. Toss the red onion, cucumber, tomatoes in the dressing. Set aside.
  • Cook the Beef:
    1. Heat a large pan or wok over high heat. Add 1 tbsp of vegetable oil and swirl to coat the pan.
    2. Once the oil is hot, add the marinated beef cubes in a single layer. Let them sear without stirring for about 1-2 minutes to get a nice brown crust.
    3. “Shake” the pan or stir the beef to cook the other sides for an additional 1-2 minutes. Cook until the beef is browned but still juicy in the center.
  • Assemble the Dish:
Place the salad on a large plate and arrange the shaking beef on top of the veggies.
Optionally, mix lime juice with salt and pepper to create a dipping sauce for extra zing.
