Bánh Bột Chiên, also known as Vietnamese Fried Rice Flour Cake, is a beloved street food in Vietnam. These little rice cakes, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, are a delightful snack or breakfast option. Making them at home is super cheap, easy and only require a few ingredients!
The first time I had Bột Chiên was at the Vietnamese Night market here in Westminster, CA (home of the OG Vietnamese here in OC). My friend highly raved about it and I was curious about this simple rice cake and egg dish. But lo, and behold, it was super delicious! I couldn’t fathom how something so simple was so yummy (and fulfilling too!).
So many days after the night market was closed (it’s only open during the summer months), I was craving this dish and wanted top recreate it. I luckily found the rice cake premade at my local 99 Ranch market here and it was pretty cheap for a big block. They had two options, original radish or taro, and you know me, I like to mix it up. So taro it is. But either one will work.
Next, you’ll need eggs and green onions. Pretty simple isn’t it? You’ll also need soy sauce, sugar and water for the sauce. You can tweak it to your liking (I highly recommend adding some chili oil to your sauce too for that extra kick!)
Bột Chiên is more than just a snack; it’s a window into Vietnam’s culinary soul. Making these fried rice flour cakes at home leaves you rewarded with an incredibly satisfying treat. So, don’t wait—gather your ingredients, follow these easy steps, and enjoy Bánh Bột Chiên from your own kitchen. Happy cooking!
